Antibiogram and PCR Detection of Verotoxic Escherichia coli Recovered from Raw Milk and Burfi of Uttar Pradesh
Page No. : 35-38
ABSTRACT
This study was undertaken to detect Verotoxic Escherichia coli in milk and burfi using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and screen the isolates for antibiotic susceptibility. A total of 80 raw milk and 160 burfi samples were collected and analysed for verocytotoxic E. coli (VTEC); of which 6.25 % (5/80) milk and 10.62% (17/160) burfi samples were found positive for VTEC by PCR. Antibiogram of VTEC isolates against 15 antimicrobials showed sensitivity to chloramphenicol and imipenem-EDTA (100%); followed by ciprofloxacin (90.90%), streptomycin (68.18%), amikacin and gentamicin (54.54%). While resistance was recorded against erythromycin and cefixime (100%), followed by ampicillin (45.45%), tetracycline (40.90%), enrofloxacin (31.81%) and ofloxacin (27.27%).Key words: Antibiogram, burfi, milk, PCR, VTEC
