ABSTRACT
Bacterial quality of freshwater fi sh sold in fi sh markets of Patna was evlauted. A total of 84 fi sh samples, consisting of skin, gills, intestine, and muscle, were sampled. The fi sh samples were transported to the laboratory, processed, and cultured in bacteriological media. A total of thirty-fi ve (35) bacterial isolates were identifi ed from the fi sh samples. The perusal of data revealed that the most frequently isolated bacterial species were Staphylococcus spp. (11.90%) followed by Escherichia coli (8.33%), Salmonella spp. (5.95%), Shigella spp. (3.57%), Proteus spp. and Klebsiella spp. (5.95%). The present study concluded that the contamination of fi sh with contaminants like Staphylococcus spp. and some enteropathogens may be an indication of unsanitary conditions under which fi sh are harvested and transported to the markets, resulting in both public health hazards and economic losses.
