ABSTRACT
Arcobacter species is animal and human pathogens recovered from variety of food sample within the past decade. Prevalence, of three Arcobacter spp. was investigated in sheep and goats faecal samples in this study. A total of 208 samples, comprising sheep feces (105) and goat feces (103) were collected from Bareilly region, UP, India. A total of 43 samples were found positive for Arcobacter species by genus specific PCR targeting16S rRNA, giving an overall prevalence of 20.67%, wherein sheep fecal samples showed 27.61% and goat fecal samples showed 13.59% prevalence. By conventional cultural method prevalence was found to be 15.38%, wherein sheep fecal samples showed higher prevalence (20.95%) than goat fecal samples (9.71%). Application of multiplex PCR for Arcobacter isolates targeting 16S and 23S rRNA genes for species identification revealed prevalence of A. butzleri (4.32%), A. skirrowii (0.48%), A. cryaerophilus (2.4%), both A. butzleri and A. cryaerophilus(0.48%), both A. butzleri and A. skirrowii (1.44%) and both A. skirrowii and A. cryaerophilus (0.44%) and all the three species (0.44%). High prevalence rate of Arcobacter spp. was recorded in sheep fecal samples. Keywords: Arcobacter, sheep, goat, mPCR, prevalence
