ABSTRACT

Salmonella enterica are widespread in humans and animals worldwide and are of increasing public health concern. A total of 1000 samples comprising 450 human and 550 animal clinical samples collected between January, 2008 and November, 2009 from different clinics located in Bareilly city of Uttar Pradesh, North India were subjected for isolation and identification of Salmonella employing standard bacteriological methods. Antimicrobial sensitivity pattern was studied against 10 drugs. Twenty seven (2.7%) isolates belonging to 7 serovars (S. Paratyphi B var java, S. Typhimurium, S. Isangi, S. Tshiongwe, S. Bsilla, S. Labadi) and rough type were isolated from1,000 human and animal clinical cases. The most prevalent serotype was Salmonella Paratyphi B var Java both among human and animal isolates. Five uncommon serotypes viz., S. Isangi, S.Tshiongwe, S. Saintpaul, S. Bsilla and S. Labadi were recorded among the animal clinical isolates. Isolation rates from human and animal cases were 1.77% and 3.45%, respectively.
