ABSTRACT

Indian dairy industry has emerged as a key player in the national economy. Safety and security risks in India have been addressed following two diff erent approaches - biosafety and biosecurity. Biosafety seeks to protect humans from pathogens, while biosecurity protects pathogens from humans. Biosecurity measures have been adopted at Indian dairy farms with an intension to identify the gaps, barriers and various limitations to prevent and control infectious diseases. Although, biosecurity is considered as the most essential pillar of dairy farming, dairy farmers in India rarely implement biosecurity control measures on their farms. Very few studies have been carried out regarding the adoption of biosecurity measures at dairy farms of India and its awareness and understanding among its stakeholder including producers, consumers, service providers. This review highlights the need to understand farmer’s perception, a" itude and constraints towards this serious issue as this will able to infl uence the farmers’ behavior and motivate them for adoption of essential biosecurity measures. This will be a starting point to develop future strategies to improve the implementation of biosecurity measures at Indian dairy farms.
