ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out to isolate K. pneumoniae from faecal samples of pigs, pork, pig farmers’ hand swabs, and associated environments. The samples were collected from diff erent organized pig farms (90), backyard farms (62), pork (50), pig farmer hand swabs (50), and associated environments (130) from in and around the Bareilly district of U" ar Pradesh. From 382 samples, 104 (27.2%) K. pneumoniae were isolated from pig rectal swabs (29%), environmental samples (25%), farmer hand swabs (24%), and pork samples (32%). The maximum isolation rate was recorded from pork (32%) followed by pigs’ rectal swabs (29%), environmental samples (25%) and pig farmer hand swabs (24%). There was no statistically signifi cant diff erence between K. pneumoniae occurrence and diff erent age groups or sample sources (P > 0.05), but signifi cant diff erence was noted between farm types (P=0.038). Despite having a low rate of isolation from pig fecal samples, pork and associated environments, the occurrence of multi-drug resistant K. pneumoniae isolates, especially an ESKAPE pathogen is concern for public health.
