Serological Detection of Brucella canis in Dogs Using AGID: A Cross-Sectional Study from Selected Indian Cities

ABSTRACT
Canine brucellosis is an important bacterial zoonotic disease that can spread rapidly in dogs kept in a confined environment. The increasing dog population can surge its incidence and risk of spreading in countries like India. Canine brucellosis is primarily caused by infection with B. canis. Considering the significance of studying the occurrence of this underrecognized zoonosis, the study was designed to detect the presence of B. canis infection in dogs from three cities of India viz. Delhi, Bareilly (UP), and Mannuthy (Kerala) using the Agar Gel Immunodiffusion technique. The obtained overall positivity was 3.65% wherein the samples from Delhi, Bareilly, and Mannuthy showed a positivity of 5.4%, 3.7%, and 1%, respectively. The considerable positivity of samples obtained in the study puts forward the need for further studies on epidemiological aspects of brucellosis in the dog population in India and its likely zoonotic potential. Keywords: Canine brucellosis, B. canis, dogs
