ABSTRACT

Rabies persists as a critical public health challenge, causing nearly 59,000 human deaths annually across the globe, and occurring predominantly in Asia and Africa, with India accounting for about 35% of these fatalities. The overwhelming majority (over 99%) of human rabies cases are dog-mediated. Systematic and integrated recording of both animal and human bite cases is essential for robust rabies surveillance and control. Adopting a One Health approach that unifies veterinary, medical, and environmental systems offers a holistic strategy for rabies prevention, control, and ultimate elimination. This review comprehensively examines prevailing practices, ongoing challenges, and recent innovations in bite case recording, highlights the interrelation between animal and human bite data, and recommends integrated solutions to strengthen rabies control systems.
