ABSTRACT

The concept of One Health underscores the intricate interdependence between human, animal, and environmental health. Tracing its origins from ancient medical observations to contemporary scientific breakthroughs, the One Health framework has evolved to address the multifaceted nature of global health challenges. Historical evidence highlights early recognition of these connections by ancient civilizations, the Middle Ages, and influential figures such as Hippocrates, Louis Pasteur, and Rudolf Virchow. The contemporary One Health approach emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, integrating insights from medicine, veterinary science, ecology, and other fields to tackle complex health issues like zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and ecosystem degradation. The practical applications of One Health are diverse, encompassing joint human-animal disease surveillance systems, integrated environmental management practices, and collaborative research efforts. These initiatives aim to enhance immediate health outcomes and build a more resilient and sustainable world capable of withstanding future health crises. Despite the challenges in interdisciplinary communication, resource allocation, policy development, and data sharing, the One Health approach remains pivotal in addressing contemporary global health challenges. By fostering preventive measures, community engagement, and global cooperation, One Health promotes holistic and sustainable solutions for a healthier future. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the One Health concept, its historical background, significance, core principles, and practical applications, highlighting its crucial role in addressing contemporary global health challenges and emphasizing the need for ongoing research, innovation, and equitable implementation.
