Foodborne Viral Pathogens: The Hidden Threat - A Review
Page No. : 152-157
ABSTRACT
Foodborne viral pathogens represent a growing concern in global public health due to their high transmissibility, resilience in diverse food matrices, and capacity to cause widespread outbreaks. Among the most prevalent pathogens are norovirus, hepatitis A virus, and hepatitis E virus, with others such as rotavirus, sapovirus, astrovirus, enterovirus, and adenovirus also contributing to the global disease burden. Although detection methods have advanced from conventional techniques to molecular approaches such as RT-PCR, challenges persist in differentiating between infectious and non-infectious viral particles, as well as in the standardization of protocols across laboratories. Furthermore, there is a pressing need for robust surveillance systems, rapid diagnostic tools, and the development of effective antiviral vaccines and therapeutics. Adopting a One Health approach, integrating efforts across agricultural, industrial, and public health sectors, is essential for mitigating the impact of foodborne viral illnesses and ensuring global food safety. Keywords: Foodborne illnesses, foodborne viruses, hepatitis A virus, hepatitis E virus, norovirus
