Cultural and Biochemical Characterization of Bacillus cereus Isolates Collected from Pantnagar, Uttarakhand
Page No. : 5-8
ABSTRACT
A total of 405 samples comprising human stool (311) and meat (raw, cooked and semi cooked) (94) were screened for the presence of Bacillus cereus. Out of which 23 stool (7.4%) and 29 meat (27.3%) samples were found positive. All the isolates showed typical growth on mannitol egg yolk polymyxin agar and found positive for motility, phenol red dextrose test and lysozyme resistance but some degree of variability was exhibited in nitrate, haemolysis and Voges-Proskauer test. All the isolates showed positive polymerase chain reaction for gyrB gene which is specific for B. cereus. It was seen that the biochemical profiles of all 52 isolates were almost similar regardless of their sources. Keywords: Bacillus cereus, characterization, cultural, meat, stool
