ABSTRACT
The present study was conducted to detect in vitro biofi lm formation of uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) strains isolated from human urine samples through Congo red agar morphotyping (CRA) assay. A total of 38 E. coli isolates from human urine samples were identifi ed by biochemical test followed by species specifi c 16s rRNA PCR. After confi rmation, all the E. coli isolates were examined for fi mH gene to confi rm the presence of type I fi mbriae and then subjected to gram-staining, bacterial culture, conventional biochemical and molecular methods for their identifi cation. All the isolates were further screened for their biofi lm forming ability using CRA method. Out of all 38 isolates, 10 (26%) isolates produced brown, dry and rough (BDAR) morphotype, 16 (42%) isolates showed red, dry and rough (RDAR) morphotype, and 12 (31.57%) isolates showed the smooth and white (SAW) morphotype. Keywords: Biofi lm, congo red agar morphotyping, fi mH gene, UPEC, UTIs
