Haemolytic and Cytotoxic Activities of Aeromonas spp. Isolated from Foods and Diarrhoeic Children
Page No. : 25-30
ABSTRACT
Ability to produce haemolysin and cytotoxin by 45 isolates of Aeromonas spp. isolated from fish, pasteurized milk, flavored milk, ice cream and stool of diarrhoeic children was investigated. Twenty six (65%) of 40 food and 4 (80%) of 5 stool isolates were haemolytic while 25 (62.5%) isolates of food and 3 of stool origins produced cytotoxic changes both in Vero and BHK-21 cell lines. It was observed that 26 (86.6%) of 30 haemolytic isolates were cytotoxic while cytotoxicity was produced by only 2 (13.3%) of 15 non-haemolytic isolates showing a significant correlation among the haemolytic and cytotoxic activities of Aeromonas spp. The public health significance of food isolates of Aeromonas having both haemolytic and cytotoxic activities has been discussed. Keywords: Aeromonas hydrophila, A. caviae, A. sobria, Cytotoxin, Haemolysin
