ABSTRACT
None of the isolates of L. seeligeri and L. welshimeri were pathogenic on in-vitro testing, however both the isolates of L. monocytogenes showed haemolysis on sheep blood agar and positive CAMP test with S. aureus. The haemolysin of L. monocytogenes is recognised as a major virulence factor and its secretion is essential for promoting the intracellular survival and growth. Information about pathogenicity/virulence of the isolates is essential for evaluating the threat posed by the pathogen owing to its presence in the foodstuffs. All L. monocytogenes isolates recovered during the study were found to be pathogenic in nature indicating potential health hazard due to consumption of meat.
