ABSTRACT

Various meat and meat product samples, viz., goat meat (19), chicken meat (20), butter chicken (19), chicken soup (7) and mutton soup (6) were bacteriologically examined for the presence of Klebsiella pneumoniae. The incidence of K. pneumoniae in chicken, goat meat, butter chicken, chicken soup and mutton soup was 10.0, 16.0, 21.0, 14.0 and 17.0 per cent, respectively. About 36.0 per cent of the K. pneumoniae isolates were identified as enterotoxigenic by rabbit ileal loop method and rabbit skin permeability factor assay. As many as 66.6% goat meat samples contained enterotoxigenic K. pneumoniae organism.
