ABSTRACT
The present study was aimed at assessing the bacteriological quality of drinking water given to broilers at retail broiler meat shops in Mathura city. Of the 45 water samples, 41 (91.11%) samples showed varying degrees of turbidity. The vessels in which the water was provided to the birds were also not clean. The total viable counts in the water samples ranged from 2.3 × 10³ to as high as 8.6 × 10⁶, and the coliform counts ranged from 3.2 × 10² to 1.4 × 10⁶. These counts for all the 45 samples were unsatisfactory for drinking water. E. coli was isolated from 11 (24.44%) samples in the present study. Nine of the total 11 E. coli isolates were sensitive to ampicillin, amoxycillin, ciprofloxacin, kanamycin and streptomycin, and exhibited resistance to gentamicin and tetracycline. Another two isolates were resistant to all the antibiotics, viz., ampicillin, amoxycillin, ciprofloxacin, kanamycin, streptomycin, gentamicin and tetracycline.
