Occurrence of Multidrug Resistant Listeria spp. in Meats and Fish
Page No. : 13-18
ABSTRACT
A total of 204 samples collected from 6 different sites of 16 goat carcasses, 2 sites of 20 chicken carcasses, 2 sites of 23 freshwater fishes and swabs from floor/platform (11 each) were screened for the presence of Listeria spp. These samples yielded a total of 14 isolates of Listeria spp. of which 3 were characterized as L. monocytogenes. The highest isolation of Listeria spp. was from goats (6), followed by chicken (3), fish (3) and platform/floor (1 each). Interestingly, the isolates recovered from goat and chicken were from different carcass sites, thus emphasizing the need to collect samples from different parts of carcass to have true picture about the occurrence of organism. Antibiogram study against 15 antibiotics revealed multidrug resistance with most isolates showing resistance to 7-14 drugs. Keywords: antibiogram, fish, Listeria, meat
