Prevalence of Escherichia coli in Animals, Humans and Foods of Animal Origin
Page No. : 27-32
ABSTRACT
The prevalence of different serotypes of E. coli and their antibiogram was assessed in animals, humans and foods of animal origin. Bacteriological examination of 470 samples from different sources revealed 29.15% to be positive for E. coli comprising of 30.00% in animals, 49.12% in humans and 22.30% in foods of animal origin. Of these, 90.51% were serotypable. The serogroups 024 (10.48%) followed by 06, 0107, 0141 (5.65% each), 0172 (4.84%) and 086 (4.03%) were predominant. Serotypes 09, 024, 060, 0107 and 0172 were common among animals, humans and foods. In-vitro antibiogram of 137 E. coli isolates against 15 different antimicrobial agents showed highest sensitivity to norfloxacin (97.81%) followed by gentamicin (95.62%), ciprofloxacin (93.43%), chloramphenicol (79.56%), cephotaxime (72.26%), nalidixic acid (68.61%) and oxytetracycline (67.15%), whereas resistance to ampicillin (92.70%) followed by furazolidone (40.88%), co-trimoxazole (36.50%) and tetracycline and colistin (34.31% each).Key words: Antibiogram, E. coli, Food animals, Man, Prevalence
