ABSTRACT

Application of an indirect avidin - biotin enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (A-B ELISA) for the detection of serum antibodies to M. bovis in infected cattle was evaluated. Serum samples from three different groups namely, tuberculosis positive, negative and animals with unknown history with respect to tuberculosis were screened. There was a considerable over-lapping of the ELISA values among the three groups of cattle, and no obvious cutoff point was obtained to distinguish sera from tuberculin tested positive and negative animals in each group. The sensitivity and specificity of this ELISA was unacceptably low and therefore may not serve as a suitable diagnostic tool.

Key words: Bovine tuberculosis, ELISA
