Occurrence of Some Zoonotic Pathogens in Semen of Ram
Page No. : 141-144
ABSTRACT
Out of eleven ejaculates collected from Hampshire and Polled Dorset rams, three samples showed no bacterial growth; one in first collections and two in second collection. Various zoonotic and other organisms recovered from the ejaculates were Staphylococcus (87.5%). Streptococcus (37.5%), E. coli (25%), Bacillus spp. (12.5%), Corynebacterium (12.5%). Listeria spp. (25%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (12.5%) and Yeast (12.5%). Isolation of Listeria spp. in the fresh ram semen signals a threat to the veterinarian and persons working with the collection and processing of semen. Out of the eight ejaculates, six samples showed two types of organism while two samples showed three type of organisms. Gentamicin (87.5%) followed by amikacin (75.0%) were found highly effective, whereas isolates were resistant to chloramphenicol.Key Words: Antibiogram, ram semen, zoonotic pathogens
