ABSTRACT

A total of 20 Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from 90 bovine mastitic milk samples were examined for drug resistance and virulence characters viz. haemolysin, DNase, coagulase, clumping factor, gelatin liquefaction and presence of plasmids. All S. aureus isolates were sensitive to cephotaxime and polymyxin-B and resistant to ampicillin and cloxacillin. All the 20 S. aureus isolates were multiple drug resistant against 2 to 8 antibiotics in different combinations. Out of 20 S. aureus isolates 11 were haemolytic, 14 coagulase, 5 DNase and 4 isolates were positive for clumping factor. Six out of 20 S. aureus isolates did not harbour any plasmid, whereas remaining 14 isolates possessed plasmids 1 to 4 in numbers with size from 6.90 to 49.77 kb.
