ABSTRACT
Herbal plants have medicinal value and can play an important role in the treatment of various infectious diseases. In present investigation, attempt was made to study the antibacterial activity of indigenous medicinal plants viz., cardamom, garlic, pepper, tulsi and turmeric. A total of 90 clinical specimens collected from the ailing animals suffering from different diseases were subjected to bacterial isolation. Out of 90 clinical specimens, 60 bacterial isolates comprising various species of genera viz., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus, Proteus, Klebseilla, Pseudomonas, Pasteurella, Streptococcus, Serratia and Bacillus were isolated and identified. The isolates of genus Escherichia, Staphylococcus and Proteus were tested against twenty five different herbal discs prepared in five different solvents viz., aqueous, chloroform, ethanol, ether and methanol. Maximum degree of bacterial susceptibility was observed to cardamom, garlic and pepper. Moderate degree of susceptibility was recorded with turmeric. The study also revealed that the herbal antibacterial extracts prepared in ethanol and methanol had better antibacterial effect, as compared to chloroform and ether. Present findings indicated that herbal extracts showed significant inhibitory activity on the bacterial isolates under study.Keywords: Allum sativum, antibacterial activity, Curcuma longa, Elletaria cardamomum, herbs, Ocium sanctum, Piper nigrum
