ABSTRACT
A total of 508 samples (raw food, environment samples and cooked food) were collected from Guwahati, Garchuk and Birubari areas of Assam state. This study was carried out to detect the contamination of samples by E. coli and K. pneumoniae. The identification of E. coli and K. pneumoniae isolates was based on cultural characteristic, biochemical test and PCR assay. A total of 73 E. coli isolated from Guwahati (29), Garchuk (36) and Birubari (8) whereas a total of 50 K. pneumoniae isolated from Guwahati (26), Garchuk (18) and Birubari (6). Highest percentage of E. coli contamination was observed in raw milk (32.87%) from Guwahati and least was observed in pork swab (1.36%) from Birubari. Likewise, the highest percentage of K. pneumoniae contamination was observed in raw milk (32%) from Guwahati and least was observed from Guwahati 2% in both raw pork and raw egg. Evidently the cooked food underwent to thorough high temperature cooking process manifest no E. coli contamination. Keywords: Assam, E. coli, K. pneumoniae, Street food
