ABSTRACT
The level of lead in muscle, spleen, kidney, heart and liver samples of goats procured from the different meat shops situated in and around Chennai city which were slaughtered at Chennai municipal corporation slaughter house, Perambur, Chennai-12 and animals slaughtered at Department of Meat Science and Technology, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai raised in the University Farm at Livestock Research Station, Kattupakkam were estimated using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The study revealed high lead content ranging from 26.50 ± 0.61 µg/g. to 29.84 ± 1.16 µg / g. in the liver, kidney, spleen, heart and muscles of goat sold in the different shops situated in and around Chennai city (Market), whereas the samples taken from the Madras Veterinary College did not show lead in detectable level. The market samples did not show any gross changes in the organs during post-mortem examination nor in histopathological studies for lead toxicity.Keywords: Goat meat, goat organs, lead, offal
