Prevalence of Echinococcus granulosus Cysts in Food Animals in and around Patna

ABSTRACT

In the present study, 550 cattle, 600 buffaloes, 1250 goats and 400 pigs slaughtered at different slaughterhouse in and around Patna were examined for the presence of the hydatid cysts. The study revealed that the prevalence of hydatidosis was highest in buffaloes (29.66%) followed by goats (8.48%), pigs (8.25%) and lowest in cattle (7.63%). Liver and lungs were found to be most common organs affected with hydatid cysts. Comparatively higher incidence of hydatidosis was observed in lungs of cattle (37.71%) than in liver (30.95%), lungs and liver both (28.57%) and spleen (4.76%). In case of buffaloes, lungs involvement was higher (41.01%) than liver (30.33%) and both lungs and liver (28.65%) whereas, in goats 64.15% lungs and 35.84% liver were found to be infected. In pigs the involvement of lungs and liver was 66.66% and 33.33%, respectively
