ABSTRACT
A retrospective epidemiological study was carried out from April 2004 to April 2005 on animal bite cases with reference to rabies at Pasteur Institute, Kolkata, which is a wide catchment area covering all West Bengal and neighbouring states for this dreaded disease. The study revealed that men were major victims and 76.88% were exposed to class-II bites. People from rural and semi-urban areas and agriculture were most vulnerable. Dog was found to be the major biting animal (89.63%).Keywords: Animal bite, epidemiology, rabies, vaccine
