ABSTRACT

Under the process of utilization of both natural and artificial water resources for fi sh farming, fish-borne zoonotic infections have emerged as a problem both for the producers and consumers, particularly in developing countries including India. Many such disease-causing agents are opportunistic in nature and hence require a pre-existing immunocompromised state in order to produce disease in the human hosts. These fish associated diseases are grouped under bacterial, parasitic, viral, and toxin illness categories and are transmitted through either ingestion of infected fish or seafood or by direct contact of lacerated or abraded skin with aquarium water. Observing basic precautions while handling, creating laboratory facilities for their rapid diagnosis, generating awareness among the general and public health personals about these erratic infections are some of the steps required to be taken in the direction of their prevention and control.
