ABSTRACT
The resistance pattern of 109 Salmonella Virchow isolates obtained over 20-year period from various animal sources against 16 antimicrobial agents revealed maximum resistance with furazolidone (83.49%) followed by doxycycline hydrochloride (67.89%), tetracycline (66.06%), cephotaxime (44.04%) and ceftriaxone (40.36%). The isolates were most sensitive to gentamicin (98.17%), tri-methoprime (97.25%) and chloramphenicol (96.59%). A total of 55 resistance patterns were observed, of which one isolate showed resistance to as many as 10 drugs. Four isolates were not resistant to any drug and 23 isolates showed resistance to 5 to 7 antibiotics. Remaining isolates were resistant to 1-4 drugs. Analysis of results as per the year of isolation indicated that there was increase in resistance among the isolates obtained during 2001-2005 in comparison to isolates obtained during 1986-1990 to most of the antibiotics tested. However, some of the antibiotics such as doxycycline hydrochloride, tetracycline, neomycin and furazolidone showed decrease in resistance between the period 1991-1995 and 2001-2005.Keywords: Antibiotic resistance, Salmonella Virchow
