ABSTRACT

Effect of sera from different animal species, cell culture media with or without cell metabolite, coconut water, egg yolk and albumin was studied on the germ tube formation by Candida albicans. The study elucidated that coconut water is the simplest substitute for the rabbit serum. The cell culture medium with and without cell metabolite can also be suitably used for the purpose. The egg yolk and the albumin appeared to be the suitable choice after coconut water as it too had shown 100% germ tube formation. The finding that the coconut water supports the germ tube formation in Candida albicans is the first report in the literature.
