Phospholipase and Proteinase Activity of the Human Isolates of Candida albicans

ABSTRACT

Twenty six isolates of Candida albicans of human origin were tested for their proteinase and phospholipase activity. All the isolates showed proteinase activity on bovine serum albumin agar, while only 39.1% isolates showed phospholipase activity. Marked variation in phospholipase production was observed as index varied from 1.2 -1.7 based on zone size around the colony. A total of ten isolates of Candida albicans selected on the basis of enzyme production ability were tested for their pathogenic potential in immuno-suppressed mice. None of the isolates showing only proteinase activity caused any mortality, while the isolates positive both for proteinase and phospholipase activity showed varying mortality.
