ABSTRACT

In the present study, a total of 52 Campylobacter isolates recovered from raw poultry meat and its intestinal content were subjected to the in vitro detection of virulence genes viz., flagellin (flaA), cytolethal distending toxin (cdtABC) and invasion associated marker (iam) by PCR using specific primers. The results indicated that out of 52 isolates, a total of 40 (76.92 %), 39 (75.00 %) and 33 (63.46 %) isolates were positive for flaA, cdtABC and iam, respectively. The species wise virulence profile study of the C. jejuni, C. coli and other Campylobacter spp. revealed that among 43 C. jejuni isolates recovered, flaA was detected in 39 isolates, whereas cdtABC and iam were present in 30 (69.76%) and 31 (72.09%) isolates, respectively. Similarly, out of 6 C. coli isolates 1 (16.66%), 6 (100%) and 2 (33.33%) and among 3 other Campylobacter spp. isolates 0, 3 (100%) and 1 (33.33%) were positive for flaA, cdtABC and iam genes, respectively.
