ABSTRACT

Rabies, a dreaded and ancient zoonoses of public health significance still endemic in developing nations particularly of African and Asian continents. It is one of the important zoonotic diseases in India with highest number of cases recorded annually. Lack of awareness in rural population could be one of the reasons of rabies prevalence in India. Along with urban rabies control, strategies must be developed for effective control of rabies in wild animals. Evolving nature of Rhabdoviruses is new frontier in molecular epidemiological studies which needs to be explored. There is a need of intersectoral collaboration between veterinarian, medicos, forest and wild life authorities and various NGOs to overcome this menace. Present overview highlights some of the important aspects on epidemiology and control of rabies in Indian context.
