Evaluation of the Potential of Novel Tailed Bacteriophage as a Surface Sanitizer to Control Methicillin -Resistant Staphylococcus aureus
Page No. : 6-9
ABSTRACT
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has emerged globally as a serious cause of morbidity and mortality in both hospitals and community se! ings. It can survive on contaminated surfaces and be transmi! ed to people. In this study, vB_StaphM-BVC1 phage was assessed for its potential use as a surface sanitizer. The bacteriophage was found to show a signifi cant log reduction of MRSA over glass coverslips mimicking the hard surfaces of hospital se! ings. At low MOIs signifi cant reductions of 1.0 to 1.5 log CFU/cm2 were recorded however, complete elimination of MRSA concentration of 4.69±0.05 log CFU/cm2 was observed at high MOIs. From the fi nding of the present study, it could be concluded that phage can be used as an eff ective surface sanitizer to decontaminate MRSA from glass surfaces. Keywords: Bacteriophage, glass surface, MRSA, surface sanitizer
