ABSTRACT
Bovine mastitis is a multi-etiological condition of udder having economic consequences to the dairy sector with impact on quality, quantity and safety of milk. Indiscriminate usage of antimicrobials to tackle mastitis often without in vitro susceptibility testing has resulted in antimicrobial resistance. Present study was under- taken to identify bacterial profile and antimicrobial susceptibility of the mastitic milk. A total of 27 milk samples were collected from Holstein Friesian crossbred cows diagnosed with clinical mastitis and subjected for culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The bacterial flora isolated comprised of Bacillus spp. (33.3%), Staphylococcus spp. (25.9%), Streptococcus spp. (18.5%), Escherichia coli (14.8%) and Pseudomonas spp. (7.4%). Isolates showed highest resistance to ampicillin-sulbactam and penicillin-G (96.3%) followed by streptomycin and amoxyclav (77.8%), cefotaxime (59.3%), ceftriaxone (55.6%), chloramphenicol (37%), ciprofloxacin (33.3%) and levofloxacin (22.2%). Keeping in view the animal, human and environmental health implications of antimicrobial resistance, need for creation of awareness about judicious use of antibiotics in dairy animals and promotion of antimicrobial stewardship is advocated.Keywords: AMR, Bacillus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus
