ABSTRACT

Many infectious zoonotic diseases act as a ‘speed breaker’ in the growth curve of Indian economy. Brucellosis is one such disease that has been appeared as an emerging disease, causing massive losses in animals and humans; although the loss counts more for large and small ruminants in the country as are mostly reared. Therefore, to tackle the silent killing agent, the Brucella organisms need to be eliminated at the root level. This can be achieved by efficient screening tests however serological tests are preferred for the easy detection of brucellosis. This study confers the epidemiological efficacies of the employed serological tests, viz., Rose Bengal Plate Test and Serum Tube agglutination Test with the gold-standard Enzyme-linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay to validate the degree of accuracy in identifying brucellosis in both large ruminant and small ruminant cases. The relative sensitivities of the tests employed were found more in cases of large ruminant sera samples whereas Rose Bengal Test proved comparatively more specific in detecting small ruminant brucellosis. As the concordance and the kappa agreement showed more proportion in Rose Bengal Plate Test, this test may be chosen for fi eld screening of ruminant brucellosis judiciously. This is indeed important in the present scenario as more effective, economical detection tests are needed to be employed in the field to combat the zoonotic disease of brucellosis.
